It was a big night for senior Tyler Small in a St. Anthony win over St. Paul last week. The Saints stay in the title hunt with the win, which came in large part thanks to the 20 points by Small.
When St. Anthony took on St. Paul earlier in this Del Rey League season, the Saints needed double overtime to finally dispatch the Swordsmen. But on Friday night, with the strength of a raucous Saints student section behind the west baseline, St. Anthony took care of business in regulation with a 63-53 victory.
Amaan Zavir, St. Anthony Basketball
Amaan Zavir earned All-Tournament honors in the Silver Division of the Damien Classic last week, leading the Saints to a third-place finish. Zavir is a talented underclassman leading a young Saints team this season.
Ryann Bennett, St. Anthony Basketball
St. Anthony junior Ryann Bennett scored her 1,000 career point last week in St. Anthony’s 79-74 loss against Caruthers High at the Gold Crown Holiday Tournament in San Diego. Bennett is averaging 19.2 points pere game this season.
It all came together for St. Anthony boys’ basketball on Friday night at Wilson as a huge second half lifted the Saints to an 80-59 victory over the Bruins. The win snaps a five-game losing streak for St. Anthony
There were plenty of questions about how St. Anthony’s boys’ basketball team would continue to compete after the departure of head coach Allen Caveness prior to last season. Caveness, who is now an assistant coach at Long Beach State, built the Saints into an Open Division squad that was the best in the city.
ones, a Long Beach native, was named Big West Defensive Player of the Year last season after finishing the conference season in the Top 5 in both steals and blocks. The sophomore was tied for second on the team while making 66 3-pointers on 37.1 percent shooting.
