City Council Honors St. Anthony’s Students For Top Honors In 2009 Academic Decathlon

Long Beach, California. -- St. Anthony High School’s team of nine students was honored on Tuesday, March 17th, by Mayor Bob Foster and members of the Long Beach City Council for their award of First Place overall honors in this year’s 2009 Southern California Private Schools Academic Decathlon. This highly challenging competition was held in Mission Hills over a two week period in February.

During a special presentation at City Hall, Mayor Foster congratulated Brittany Rodriguez, Dolan Kay, Jhenevieve Cabasal, Kevin Que, Nick Gerard, Paul Mondares, Angel Dubon, Jonathon Rivera, and Sasha Nasrabadi, as well as their teacher/coach and Science Department Chair, Mr. Edgar Salmingo, and Principal Mike Schabert.

According to Decathlon Coordinator JoAnn Schnelldorfer, a total of 242 students tested in this competition in 10 subjects: language/literature, essay, art, music, social science, economics, math, interview, speech, and the Super Quiz. In addition to its first place win, St. Anthony’s also earned an additional Team Gold for First Place in the Super Quiz, an exam that focused this year on Evolutionary Biology.

Individually in these events, the nine student team, led by overall points leader and Team Captain Brittany Rodriguez, Class of 2011, brought home 26 medals.
