AP 2D Art and Design Program Overview

Grade: 11, 12 Prerequisites: Exploring Art I & Exploring Art II

The AP Art and Design program offers three courses—AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-D Art and Design, and AP Drawing. Students develop a portfolio of work over the year that showcases inquiry through art and design, documenting the evolution of their materials, processes, and ideas. Portfolios include artworks, process documentation, and written reflections. In May, students submit their portfolios for evaluation based on criteria such as synthesis of materials, sustained investigation, and experimental practice guided by artistic questions.

Exploring Art I

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisites: None

This introductory art course focuses on developing fundamental drawing and painting skills using various media such as drawing pencils, pastels, watercolors, collages, and acrylic paint. Emphasis is placed on understanding composition through elements and principles of design, applied to both realistic and abstract themes drawn from life and imagination. Students study influential artists, conduct research, and create art inspired by these artists and personal experiences. The course includes field trips to museums, with transportation costs collected before each excursion.

Exploring Art II

Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisites: Exploring Art I

Building on skills from Exploring Art I, this course is designed for students serious about developing advanced art skills. Strong drawing abilities are essential for success in this class. The curriculum includes field trips to museums, with transportation costs collected before each excursion.

Media Communication and Production

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisites: None

The Media Communication and Production course explores storytelling through various media platforms, emphasizing documentary-style editorials. Students learn essential skills in writing, filming, producing, and editing impactful content across social media, traditional film, studio productions, and digital video marketing.

Yearbook

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisites: None

The Yearbook course involves meeting strict deadlines and requires substantial out-of-school commitment, including computer access for completing tasks. Students must demonstrate responsibility, independence, and initiative, as they are accountable for meeting timelines and collaborating effectively within a team-oriented environment to put together the school’s Yearbook.
