Music Program

The St. Anthony High School Music Program offers all students opportunities for musical growth and performance. Our program includes a diverse range of ensembles catering to every interest and skill level, including Marching Band/Pep Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Beginning Band, and Color Guard.

Courses & Ensembles

Band

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisites: Audition or Teacher

Recommendation

Band offers students a large ensemble experience to enhance both individual instrumental skills and ensemble performance abilities, encompassing both Concert Band and Marching Band settings. Participation includes attendance at all football games and evening rehearsals. A mandatory two-week on-site marching band camp in August prepares students for performances. The Concert Band also represents the school at festivals, showcasing their musical talents.

Choir

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisites: None

Choir focuses on developing fundamental voice production techniques for singing and enhancing musicianship skills. Students will learn about breath support, proper breathing techniques, and how to release breath effectively. They will also explore vocal freedom, intonation manipulation, pitch matching, music reading, and identifying basic musical phrases and pitches by ear. The curriculum covers a wide range of vocal music styles, from classical to contemporary popular genres, along with each style's historical context and significance. The course aims to provide students with a solid foundation in singing and musicianship, as well as a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of vocal music history and diverse styles.

Digital Music Production

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisites: None

Digital Music Production is an introductory course focusing on creating music electronically. Students will learn principles of original sound production and recording instruments/vocals, emphasizing proper mixing techniques for original music creation. The course introduces computing concepts, techniques, and terminology through music applications, with hands-on experience using GarageBand and Logic software. Students will develop practical skills applicable to careers in music performance, entertainment, recording, audio engineering, and more, gaining proficiency in music sequencing, synthesis, and live sound. Additionally, the course covers music fundamentals, notation, history, culture, theory, MIDI, digital recording, and basic music industry business practices.

Music Appreciation

Grade Level: 9 Prerequisites: Teacher Recommendation

Music Appreciation is a course designed to deepen students' understanding of the musical world. Through exploration of music history, theory, elements, diverse musical cultures, and production techniques, students gain a heightened awareness and appreciation of music's essence. The class aims to cultivate active listening skills, encouraging students to engage with music in their surroundings. Using lectures, discussions, listening sessions, and visual analyses, students develop a foundational level of music literacy and broaden their appreciation of music's role in the world.
