The St. Anthony Instrumental Music Program is open to all students at St. Anthony. Since 2007 the program has been under the direction of Michael Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd is a professional composer and performer with nearly 20 years of music education experience. Under Mr. Lloyd’s direction the instrumental program strives to provide high quality musical performance experiences for its members. The St. Anthony High School Instrumental Music Department is a Platinum member of the KHS Music Academic Alliance program. Currently the Instrumental Music Program includes a Marching Band, a Concert Band, a Jazz Ensemble, a Concert Percussion Ensemble, and a Color Guard. All of these ensembles are open to students of all skill levels; from beginner to advanced. Any student interested in joining one of these ensembles should contact Mr. Lloyd at email@example.com.
The Marching band is a competitive musical ensemble that competes across Southern California during the fall season. The Marching Band is a 7 time California State Band Championships finalist; finishing in 4th place in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. This ensemble strives to teach the principles of music while adding an athletic element that creates a rewarding environment for all of it’s members. The Marching Band fulfills the P.E. requirements for all SAHS students. The Marching Band is on hiatus for the 2018-19 school year but it will return in 2019-20.
The Concert Band is a combined band comprised of all the wind and percussion students in the St. Anthony Instrumental Music Program. Students receive an overview of music theory and develop the technical skills needed to advance in their music performance abilities. Concert Band typically performs Grades 2 and 3 literature and participates in concerts and festivals during the school year.
The Jazz Ensemble is a performance-oriented ensemble designed for serious, dedicated musicians. Students get a "real-world" experience playing challenging music, and are introduced to a wide array of music including big band, swing, bebop, Latin, funk, and rock. Students who perform with this ensemble will develop a higher level of performance skills and musical knowledge. The Jazz Ensemble plays at concerts, festivals, and gigs throughout the school year.
New for the 2018-19 school year; the concert ensemble allows students of all levels to gain experience in percussion performance through competition. The Concert Percussion ensemble utilizes the tradition instruments of the orchestral percussion world (marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, chime, timpani, and a multitude of drums) to create and engaging musical production that showcases the performers abilities. This ensemble is open to all SAHS students and rehearsals typically happen after school.
Color Guard is a year-long performance group. Students develop technical ability and skills using flags, sabers, and rifles, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. During the fall season, the Color Guard performs with the St. Anthony Marching Saints. During the spring season, the Winter Guard learns their own show and performs at indoor competitions. Workshops are typically held in June. No experience is required to join the Color Guard. If you're looking for a fun activity and want to meet some new people, come check it out! The Color Guard fulfills the P.E. requirements for all SAHS students. The Color Guard is on hiatus for the 2018-19 school year but it will return in 2019-20.
