As soon as the St. Anthony High football team stopped penalizing itself, it began punishing its opponent.

The Saints hurt themselves in the first half of Friday's Santa Fe League game against St. Monica with a rash of miscues. But a strong running game, a strong defensive effort and far fewer penalties in the second half led to a 21-7 victory at Clark Field. St. Anthony improved its league record to 2-1 and its overall record to 5-3.

Quarterback Lamont Rowe ran 20 times for 147 yards and a touchdown and tailback John Graves added 126 yards and two TDs.

"In the first half we killed ourselves again with penalties," said St. Anthony coach Brian Walsh, who has watched his team struggle in that area in recent weeks. "But we cleaned it up in the second half and kind of pieced (the victory) together."

The Saints held a slim 7-0 lead at halftime before extending their advantage to 14-0 in the third. St. Anthony led 21-0 in the fourth before La Salle (0-8, 0-3) scored a late touchdown.

"We controlled the game most of the way," said Walsh.

Senior linebacker Mika Yandall had nine tackles and one sack and Graves added seven tackles and a sack from his linebacker position.

St. Anthony visits Bell-Jeff next Saturday.
