President's Ambassadors at Saint Anthony College Preparatory High School
During Fall 2005, under the direction of SAHS President REGINA HOLDEN RUSHING, '67, the 2005-2006 President's Ambassadors gathered for a retreat and training day at BILL '65 & MARLENE '66 MONCURE'S home, where Alumni Director PAT O"SHEA KELLY, '51 led an interactive workshop seeking selected SAHS student input regarding:
PRESERVING THE PAST
HONORING THE PRESENT
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
PRESERVING THE PAST
A meaningful way for us to preserve St. Anthony High School's past would be. . .
"to display our achievements and honor our Alumni." (MARKISHA BETHUNE)
"to ensure we acknowledge those in the past. By honoring those in our graduated classes, we further encourage more of our alumni to be active in our school community. This will then spread the word that SAHS is alive. By keeping our image alive in the hearts of our alumni, we give them a sense of appreciation and hope that they become active members of our school." (ANTHONY DIAZ)
"to remember those who have gone before us and remember their accomplishments." (ANDY HARDEMAN)
"to display accomplishments through Hall of Fame, share with others through brochures, etc., honor active alumni." (KINA MOIMOI)
"to bring more activities, have more opportunities for students to let their voices be heard." (LEE ANN VILORIA)
HONORING THE PRESENT
Some ways students could honor St. Anthony High School in its 85th Anniversary year would be. . .
"- promote school at the Long Beach Walk; see t-shirts, wear purple
- have Dance for all ages w/dance off. Present students dance to like 80's music and Class of 80's dance to our music.
- parade
- raise G.P.A.
-sponsor events" (SARAH ELLIS)
"for students to raise GPA's participate in a parade to show school pride; sponsor events for the school." (ALEXANDRIA HOCHMUTH)
"to have a parade in honor of the school, or represent the school in a parade. Citizen Saints in the spirit of the AFJ ROTC Program." (EDDIE PORTILLO)
HONORING THE PRESENT
During its 85th Anniversary Year, what I like best about St. Anthony High School right now is. . .
"Our school spirit and the support we have from alumni, faculty, friends, and families. Since the beginning of the school year our varsity football team has accomplished a lot. We've won more games this year than other years." (KIMBERLY BILBAO)
"that this year our school grew in size. Even though we did grow, our school is still small and that's one thing I don't want to see change drastically." (FERNANDO CABRERA)
"- school is small so we all kinda know each other
- more spirit
- more places to hang out
- paint job makes it look nice
- new vending machines
- choice of a 7th period
- supportive Alumni
- good athletes." (LUIS FLORES)
"- we're close
- school small
- relationships with teachers
- better spirit this year
- winning games
- the people
- support from alumni
- new books." (JULIA JOHNSON)
"- the teachers and students get along very well
- we all have school spirit
- this year our football team has been doing very well
- our school being small
- the Alumni's support of our school."
(SYLVIA UKWU)
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
In order to prepare for the future, I will endeavor to. . .
"- show our positive attitude and integrity
- show that our school is small and it's nice to be there."
(RICHARD CHOV)
"- create a good image for our school
- represent the school and promote spirit
- show a positive attitude and disposition
- maintain the legacy."
(KEVIN GROTH)
"- spread the positive things our school has to offer, in order to recruit new students:
> that being small you won't have friends only in your own class, but in other classes as well (ex: seniors, freshmen)
> history of our school
> fun and positive atmosphere
- present myself well so I will set good examples and hopefully encourage others to attend our school."
(NICOLE LEE)
"- represent our school and promote spirit
- maintain the legacy, history and respect."
(BRITTANI WELCH)
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
In order to prepare students for the future, it would be beneficial for us if SAHS. . .
"- enroll more students
- have more attractive facilities, i.e., better choice of colors; better lunch tables
- well-rounded cafeteria
- better library
- safer more secure environment
- better bus
- better incentives for spirit."
(BRENDA CARRILLO)
"- more variety and higher academic rates
- improve facilities
- more spirited students
> encourage silliness
- higher standards for students
> better recruiting
- better arts program
- better sports
- improve image
- higher quality of teachers."
(APRIL LAUGHLIN)
"- higher academic programs
- higher quality of teachers
- attractive appearance (colorful schools) Paint!!!
- better technology (Labs school)
Our school seems damp; we should develop programs to make our school look higher class, yet modest, to connect to all people." (PATRICK VALDEZ)
Many thanks to our PRESIDENT'S AMBASSADORS for their concise opinions, insight, and thoughtful consideration of responses. St. Anthony High School's 85th Anniversary places them at a historic crossroads, wherein they have incisively considered their roles as SAHS students with regard to: PRESERVING THE PAST, HONORING THE PRESENT, PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE.
