SCHOOL NEWS ARTICLE - June/July 2005

A SAFE, CARING CAMPUS WHERE BODIES STRENGTHEN, MINDS FLOURISH, AND SOULS THRIVE.

Teenagers need a place to grow that nourishes them in all areas: body, mind and spirit. When all of these are in balance, the result is a healthy, happy, fully integrated human being. St. Anthony College Preparatory High School is such a place.

The mission of St. Anthony is to provide a quality, affordable college preparatory education for all its students, within the context of Gospel values. This is achieved through our spiritual, academic, and extra-curricular programs which enable our students to become productive members of a complex, global society.

Within the downtown Long Beach community, the “Home of the Saints” is a caring, safe campus that meets the needs of families who value a faith-based college preparatory education for their child. Our students come from diverse ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds, and our small student population ensures that every child is known. No one is lost.

The school has a rich, 85 year tradition of service as Long Beach’s premier Catholic high school. We are committed to our downtown location and inspired by the renewal which surrounds us and the community support we receive. Our more than 14,000 alumni provide physical, financial, and spiritual support, and their generosity helps ensure that no child who is qualified and wants to attend St. Anthony is turned away due to need.

Academically, it is notable that ALL OUR STUDENTS participate in a college preparatory, University of California-approved, educational program. The curriculum is designed to challenge even the best student and, upon graduation, St. Anthony students are prepared for admission to all major universities. The average class size is 23, and we have a full-time student/teacher ratio of 15:1.

This year, 95% of our graduating seniors are going on to college.  Of these, half are enrolled in four year institutions. These include private and public universities and colleges such as UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, the University of Hawaii, the University of Alaska, Kansas State University, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, Northridge, San Bernadino and San Diego, as well as Loyola Marymount and Mount St. Mary’s. Some of our students will continue their education at technical and fashion institutes, and some are enrolled in local community colleges such as Cerritos, Cypress, El Camino, Golden West, Harbor, and Long Beach City College.

We are proud of our graduating Class of 2005. They have been well-nurtured by teachers and staff, parents and family, and by the entire “Community of Saints” which surrounds them, throughout their four years at St. AnthonyCollege Preparatory high School. They have worked hard to achieve balance in all areas – physical, intellectual, and spiritual – and are prepared to move on, to both serve and to lead, with Christ as their model.

Students are being accepted for entrance next fall.  Incoming freshmen must take an entrance exam. Please contact the Registrar’s Office to schedule an appointment and interview. 562-435-4496.
