The "Hippie" Kitchen

Have you ever felt so bad that you thought that life wasn't worth it anymore? Well, think again.

It was a heartbreaking yet fulfilling experience

~ Evelyn Medina

Believe it or not, there are thousands of people out there that would give anything to have our lives. There are countless people out there who don't have anything to eat,

or even a place to live. Saturday March 10th from 7:30a.m. to about 1:00p.m, six students from our very own school volunteered to attend the Hospitality Kitchen, or as most of us know it, The "Hippie Kitchen," located in West Los Angeles.

The "Hippie" Kitchen is a place where a lot of people that are less fortunate or homeless go to get some food to put in their stomachs. The six students that volunteered to attend this event were Evelyn, Roxanna, Cheyenne, Amber-Lee, Kristina, and me.

We saw how homeless people actually live. "It was a heartbreaking yet fulfilling experience" said Evelyn Medina.

The day was filled with different tasks such as slicing and washing vegetables, drying dishes, and serving the food. The meal contained beans with pork, or veggie beans with rice, served with a spoon of salad, a piece of either white or wheat bread, corn on the cob, vegetables, and fruit.

If you could only see the expression on their faces when looking at the food. It was as if they hadn't eaten in weeks, and maybe that's because they hadn't. They were all very appreciative of every volunteer, but what touched us the most, was their smile. It only took a couple of hours, and it truly changed our perspective in life.

If six Saint Anthony students and two teachers, Mr. Mendoza, and Mr. Salmingo gave hundreds of uncared-for people hope for a day, imagine what we all can do to make a difference.
