NBA player Darrick Martin to Host “Darrick Martin Basketball & Books Youth Camp”
at St. Anthony High School
Long Beach, CA– NBA veteran Darrick Martin will host a free youth basketball day camp at St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach for boys and girls aged 7-17 on July 21-25th. The camp check-in is Monday, July 21st, at 8:00 a.m. in the high school gymnasium located at 6th and Alamitos Avenue. Camp closes Friday afternoon, July 25th, at 2:30 p.m. The daily schedule is 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Darrick Martin is a 1988 graduate of St. Anthony High School who has played in the NBA for 13 years and is currently a member of the Toronto Raptors team. This is the second year Martin has offered his Basketball and Books Youth Camp at St. Anthony’s in Long Beach. Last summer’s camp hosted 125 students, and enrollment is expected to grow this year.
The Darrick Martin Basketball and Books Youth Camp is designed to offer not only basketball instruction, but to provide lessons on the importance of education and life-skills development. Martin will be on hand each day, along with a host of NBA players and volunteers committed to empowering youth and increasing their chances of success in life.
“I am very fortunate to have had such a long NBA basketball career,” says Martin, “but I was also blessed to be able to get a good education. It is important to pass along what I’ve learned in life to the youth where I grew up.”
According to Brian Walsh, St. Anthony’s Athletic Director, “The Camp will focus on development of skills which nourish the body, mind and spirit in a variety of areas. We’ll be offering everything from nutrition and hygiene, to goal setting, study skills and leadership development.” Camp participants will also receive a free lunch each day and a camp t-shirt.
Applications are due Monday, July 7th, and are available at St. Anthony’s, 620 Olive Avenue, Long Beach, or may be downloaded from St. Anthony’s web site (www.longbeachsaints.org). For more information, contact Ms Redding at 562-435-4496, Ext. 1228.
