EXCELLENCE FROM THE INSIDE OUT
2007 Accreditation Scores High Marks
St. Anthony College Preparatory High School recently received top marks as an educational institution from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) when the Self-Study Committee visited the high school in March, 2007. This was great news for the 87 year old high school that is the premier Catholic high school in the City of Long Beach.
The entire school community has remained focused on excellence and continuous improvement in recent years, and the accolades presented by the WASC review team underlined the results of this focus, and its positive impact on student learning.
The Visiting Committee reported that, “St. Anthony College Preparatory High School has made substantial progress towards implementing its goals since the last WASC visit in 2004. The school has worked collaboratively with all stakeholders of the community to make immediate improvements and to develop a strategic plan.” The review team was chaired by Sister Cheryl Milner, SNJM, Principal, Bellarmine-Jefferson High School, and assisted by Mr. Rick Spicer, Assistant Principal, Bishop Conaty-Loretto High School.
St. Anthony received commendations from the Visiting Committee in the following areas:
- The hiring of a new Principal in 2005 which created a collaborative spirit within the school community and a positive outlook for the future.
- The revitalization of the parent organization which increased parent support for and involvement in the school.
- The re-establishment of the school’s Foundation which increased financial support for the school.
- The outreach and marketing activities of the President which strengthened the image of the school in the local community and facilitated development and recruitment.
- The establishment of the universal grading rubric and development of school-wide policies regarding homework and make-up tests which created standardized assessment practices and greater consistency for students.
- The alignment of the school’s curriculum with California State Standards, Archdiocesan guidelines and four-year college entrance requirements which increased student learning and provided greater opportunity for college-bound students.
- The development of a comprehensive three-tiered faculty evaluation program which increased teacher effectiveness and improved student learning.
According to Susie Chow, WASC Commissioner for the California Federation of Teachers, “The greatest value of the WASC protocol is that it ensures equity and fairness to all students, in all schools. Parents, teachers, staff members and students participate in a process that enables them to officially self examine their school plan, set their own goals and assess if their goals are reached for continuous improvement.”
