English 102 English 9: Humanities A, B
Grade: 9 One year; meets CSU/UC “b” requirement
This is a first-year course designed to introduce the student to literature, composition, and speech through intensive studies of the Humanities. The main focus will be the study of literature, art, religion, history, culture, and geography from the Ancient to the Modern World. There will be an emphasis on writing skills, critical thinking, literary analysis and synthesis, and oral presentation skills.
English 103 English 9: Honors Humanities A, B
Grade: 9 One year; meets CSU/UC “b” requirement
Prerequisite: High score on the High School Placement Exam, or teacher recommendation.
This is an accelerated course for the Humanities. This higher level college preparatory course is designed to strengthen the honor’s student’s abilities to comprehend and analyze literature. The primary focus will be the study of literature, art, religion, history, culture, and geography from the Ancient to the Modern World. There will be an emphasis on writing skills, critical thinking, literary analysis and synthesis, and oral presentation skills. This is a pre-AP course.
English 111 Reading/Language
Grade: 9 One year
This course is designed to improve and refine a student’s reading and writing skills. Reading is the necessary foundation that establishes the critical building blocks for the college prep student. Emphasis is on reading comprehension, and the structure and mechanics of writing, grammar, vocabulary, and study skills.
English 202 English 10: World Literature A, B
Grade 10 One year; meets CSU/UC “b” requirement
This is a comprehensive course which reinforces the skills and knowledge previously learned in the areas of literature, composition, and speech. The primary focus will be the study of World literature according to genre and theme, combined with techniques of literary analysis and synthesis, critical thinking, comprehension, and oral presentation skills.
English 203 English 10: Honors World Literature A, B
Grade: 10 One year; meets CSU/UC “b” requirement
Prerequisite: B or above in Honors English 9, or teacher recommendation.
This is an accelerated course designed to strengthen the honor’s student’s skills and knowledge learned in the areas of literature, comprehension, critical thinking, literary analysis, synthesis, and speech. The primary focus of the course will be works of literature from around the world according to genre and theme. This is a pre-AP course.
English 302 American Literature A, B
Grade: 11 One year; meets CSU/UC “b” requirement
This is a comprehensive course which reinforces the skills and knowledge learned in the areas of literature, comprehension, and speech. The primary focus will be the development of American literature from the Colonial period until the present, combined with the techniques of literary response and analysis. Emphasis will be placed on the way in which a work of literature is related to the themes and issues of its historical period and literary criticism.
English 303 Honors American Literature A, B
Grade: 11 One year; meets CSU/UC “b” requirement
Prerequisite: B or above in Honors English 10, or teacher recommendation.

English 402 British Literature and Composition
Grade: 12 One year; meets CSU/UC “b” requirement

The primary focus will be the development of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period until the present combined with techniques of literary response and analysis. Emphasis will on analysis of the way in which a work of literature is related to the themes and issues of its historical period and literary criticism.
English 412 Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition
Grade: 11, 12 One year; meets CSU/UC “b” requirement
Prerequisite: B or above in Honors English 11, or teacher recommendation.
This is an accelerated course designed to strengthen the honor’s student’s ability to comprehend, synthesize, and analyze literature. Emphasis will be on creative and critical writing, critical thinking skills, preparation for the AP exam, and oral presentation skills. This course will primarily focus on British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period until the present, in addition to connecting a work of literature to the themes and issues of its historical period. Some works from European and American authors may be covered in conjunction with a historical time period. Students are required to take the AP exam.
English 501 Yearbook
Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 One year
Prerequisite: permission of the instructor.
This class prepares and publishes the school yearbook The Anthonian. Students learn and apply skills in design, photography, writing, management and marketing.
