Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do you have to be Catholic to attend?
- No. About 20% of our students are of another faith. We accept and respect all faith backgrounds. Our religion curriculum covers the Old and New testaments, Sacramental experiences in the Catholic traditions, World Religions, and Morality/Ethics. This offers the students not only a foundation in Catholic teachings but also a global perspective on religions of the world and a foundation in ethics and values.
2. Do you offer honors and AP courses?
- Yes. About 25% of the student body is enrolled in either honors or AP courses. The curriculum continues to expand to meet the needs of our student population. At this time we offer honors and AP courses in math, science, social studies, and English. Next year we are planning to expand AP offerings by implementing a virtual classroom in conjunction with the UC system. This virtual classroom would allow students to enroll in a variety of AP courses and interface with college professors. Many high schools are using this model for students who are self-starters and eager to learn at a fast pace.
3. Do you have a music program?
- We are in the process of developing our music program through the gracious assistance of many alumni and community friends. We have most of our instruments and are in the process of hiring a teacher. We hosted a summer “Band Camp” for students who are beginners and who would like to be part of our band. Future classes will include Music Appreciation, Choir, and Instruments or Jazz Ensemble. Our goal is to offer a full program by the fall 2007.
4. What foreign languages do you offer?
- Currently we offer Spanish language classes. We suggest those students who want to explore and learn other languages to concurrently enroll in classes through LBCC. Students who prefer this option earn both college and high school credit.
5. How much is tuition?
- Tuition is $5300 for Catholic families and $5700 for non-Catholic families. Parents are also required to provide service to the school through fundraising opportunities that help build ties that go beyond the school buildings and help strengthen the bond between the school and all who come in contact with it.
6. Does the school offer financial aid?
- About 45% of our students receive financial aid based on need. We also encourage our families to apply for financial aid through the Catholic Ed Foundation. The CEF provides assistance to about 40 St. Anthony College Preparatory High School families per year.
7. What sports do you offer?
- The school offers 10 varsity sports - (full list). Most students who demonstrate a desire to participate will have the opportunity to play at the varsity level by the time they are in the 10th grade. At this time we do not offer golf or water polo.
8. Are your teachers credentialed?
- We have a full-time faculty of 17. Of those 17, two hold doctorate degrees, five hold master’s degrees, six hold California credentials, and six are working towards higher degrees and/or credentials. All of our teachers participate in research-based professional development in order to stay abreast of current trends and practices in the field of education.
9. What is your graduation rate? And how many graduates go on to college?
- All of our students graduate in four years. About 60% of our students choose to go on to four year colleges and universities, 39% go to community colleges and 1% go on to technical school or work.
10. Do your students have to take the high school exit exam to graduate?
- No, however they do have to meet the graduation requirements, which are more stringent than the public school system. Every student is required to take the PSAT and SAT/ACT before graduation.
11. Do your students take any type of standardized test like the California State Tests?
- Our students take the IOWA test of basic skills. This is a standardized test that measures student’s progress against a national standard (their peers across the nation). We use this test not for accountability purposes but to help identify strengths and weaknesses and help drive decisions for curriculum.
